The Basque Country. A little slice of heaven between France and Spain on the Atlantic coast. Serious waves, serious food. As in 04, the Royal Single Trophee was partaken in; this time with a slightly higher score and a chance to surf with former world champion Tom Curren in 6-8' dumping shorepound at hightide the day after a giant storm. Day one of the comp was called off due to 30k on-shore winds. Foam was blown several hundred meters from the waves up onto the parkland above the beach. Always a great event thanks to the incredible efforts of the Pur-Jus crew. Thanks to local shaper and all around good guy Ricardo of Carioca Surf, a beautiful retro 6'2" singlefin was procured for the event. One hour away in San Sebastian, Spain we dined at Arzak, a Michelin 3 star joynt with absolutely stunning food. That creepy desert plate in the photo is chocolate, taro root and liquid-nitrogen blown green tea ice cream. Clap your hands and say damn. Another side trip was made to Bilbao where we visited the Gugghenhiem, wandered through the awesome Serra elipses and smiled at the giant flower dog. Another aspect of the trip, which will be published next month in DirtRag, was the testing of the new Dahon Flo. The Flo is a BreakAway enabled travelling mountain bike with a fully race-ready parts spec that splits in half and fits in a standard suitcase. Voila zero travel hassle, which is not the case with surf craft - no pun intended. The Flo was ridden to check surf up and down the coast from our Biarritz HQ, as well as tested in the magical forrest trails of Anglet. Bruiserella and I had the great fortune of two awesome travel companions, Jess and Dina, which made the whole trip that much more fun. Le Pays Basque, Euskal Herri, however you say it, the Basque Country is one of the most spectacular destinations and a particular favorite for le Squadra. Onward!
